Maharaja’s College students arrested for blockade; out on bail

The court has asked the students to appear before the magistrate court in Kakkanad on Saturday for further hearing in the case

KOCHI: The Judicial First Class Magistrate Santosh Venu has granted bail to 11 students taken into custody while staging a street theatre at Park Avenue Road in front of Maharaja’s College on Friday for obstructing road traffic.

The court has asked the students to appear before the magistrate court in Kakkanad on Saturday for further hearing in the case.

The students staged the street play in solidarity with the ongoing strike by a section of teachers and students against the government’s decision to grant autonomy to the Maharaja’s College.

The students taken into custody were kept at the central police station during the day and produced before the magistrate late in the evening.

They were charged under section 353 of the IPC for preventing the police from performing their official duty.

The students have been identified as Joel, Gokul Gopinath, Sarzin, Sayuj, Abhilash, Jeny Sulfath, Sarath Babu, Farad, Aswath, Ananthu and Narayanan.

Santosh P. Vargheese, a state committee member of the All Kerala Government Teachers Union condemned the arrest of students.
