Kerala High Court initiates case against speeding by private buses
Kochi: Kerala High Court on Friday suo motu initiated a case with regard to the speeding private buses in Kochi city and asked IG M.R. Ajith Kumar to conduct a detailed study into the various issues related to private buses.
The court issued the order on a suo motu case in the recent attack against a commuter who had questioned the speeding of buses.
The court also made lawyer Kaleeswaram Raj amicus curiae to assist the court. It asked the IG to submit the details for the last one or two years and the follow-up action thereon and the stage of such prosecution.
Justice Alexander Thomas asked the IG to consider the views of experienced police officers, former collectors, transport commissioner and deputy transport commissioner about the problem.
The IG would consult transport commissioner, deputy transport commissioner and district collector to get feedback and inputs.
He would also consult the state police chief and take an overall view of the matter and make suggestions for toning up and increasing the functional efficacy of the authorities, including cops.
The court asked the IG to keep in mind the rights and interests and constrains faced by the private bus operators and their crew so that an even-handed and harmonious approach by consulting all stakeholders is effectively made before the court.
