Thiruvananthapuram: The self-financing engineering management association has decided take action against colleges that have collected less fees than that fixed for the management quota as per the agreement with the government. The association fears that students may avoid colleges which collect higher fees.
Mr G.P.C. Nayar, president, Kerala Self-Financing Engineering College Managements Association (KSFECMA), told DC that the association would examine whether any managements had decided to reduce the fees and take appropriate action.
Some colleges had reduced the fees due to many seats remaining vacant. During the 2014 admissions, 30,000 seats, including 11,448 merit quota seats, were vacant mainly due to the spurt in the number of colleges.
Initially, there were only nine colleges in the state with a sanctioned intake of 2,810, but the number has grown to 157 with 58,220 seats. Of them, 46,622 are in the self-financing colleges.
This year, of the 1, 11,109 candidates who wrote the engineering entrance examination, 75,258 qualified. Of them 55,180, including 24,472 female candidates, have been included in the rank list.
The total number of engineering seats is less than that of students in the rank list. As many as 30, 148 students have registered their options.
