It rained & Kodagu stopped singing
Mysuru: Heavy rain continued to pound Kodagu resulting in inundation of Bagamandala, Karadikod, Ayyangeri, Aikola, Guyya and few other places in the picturesque district on Friday.
The district administration used two boats and rafts and rescued several people from Bagamandala with the help of personnel of the fire force and home guards. Besides, traffic between Bagmandala-Ayyangeri, Bagamandala-Madikeri, Balale-Nittur, Murnad-Boikeri-Napoklu was affected because of the downpour.
Official sources said Kodagu recorded double the amount of rainfall compared to previous year during the period January to June 26.
While it recorded an average of 549 mm from January to 26 June last year, this year from January to till date, it has already recorded 1089.68mm of rainfall. On June 26, Kodagu recorded as much as 120.21mm of rainfall. Schools and colleges will remain closed till Saturday, sources added.
Such copious rain in Kodagu and surrounding areas has resulted in enhanced inflow and rise in the level of water in KRS dam. On Friday, water level was 94.25 feet against its full capacity of 124.80 feet, the inflow being 28,248 cusecs, and outflow 8204 cusecs.
At Kabini, the water level was only five feet away from the maximum level—2278.31 feet against its capacity of 2284 feet.
Engineers at Kabini have released a flood alert for people in HD Kote taluk, and the local administration has declared a holiday for schools till Saturday as a precautionary measure.
