Hospital staff labels HIV positive woman as ‘Bio-Hazard’

Reportedly, she was also made to clean her own medical waste post delivery

Meerut: A 30-year-old HIV positive pregnant woman was admitted to Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Medical college in Meerut on June, 19 2015, after she was scheduled for her caesarean delivery. The woman left in shock after the doctors present at the hospital labelled her as “bio-hazard”, and a big signboard was reading “Bio Hazard +ve” with a red AIDS ribbon was stuck to her bed.

According to a report, she was also made to clean her own medical waste, which is generated after the doctors cut the stitches three days post delivery. The doctors are also alleged of humiliating the mother for “giving birth to another diseased child”.

This inhuman incident was later reported to the Care Support Centre (CSC), which helps people surviving with HIV. They immediately dispatched its team to the hospital.

The team members of CSC tore off the signboard, which was displayed at the woman’s bed. "In fear, the hospital authorities sprung into action and rushed the hospital staff for damage control, “Ritu Saxena, one of the team members, was reportedly quoted.

The doctors at the hospital claim to have given a written apology to the patient, but the woman said she is afraid that her daughter might have to face the same discrimination in future.
