Check-in air baggage to be charged
New Delhi: Passengers may soon have to pay extra for their check-in baggage on flights, something which currently is free of charge up to 15 kg, since almost all airlines now want the government to allow them to levy an extra charge on this.
Aviation regulator DGCA is considering a proposal submitted by three domestic low-cost carriers, which have sought permission to be allowed to charge passengers for check-in baggage and are also ready to give a discount on fares to passengers, if they travel without check-in baggage.
Senior DGCA sources said almost all airlines are in favour of charging passengers for check-in baggage. But there is no proposal so far for any extra charge on carrying hand-baggage, which passengers are allowed to carry into the aircraft, subject to a weight limit of 7-Kg. The government has also asked the DGCA to make a comparison of fare levels.
