Anam Mirza: Off the list
City’s St Francis college ejects Anam Mirza from admissions
Hyderabad: When the final merit list for Masters in Mass Communication at St Francis emerged, Anam Mirza (Sania Mirza’s sister) was happy to find her name on the list. But two days later when she arrived to pay the fees, she found that her name was missing. Anam finds it hard to believe that her name appeared initially on the list, “by mistake”.
She claims that one of the reasons that her name “was deleted” was because during the interview she had an argument with one of the lecturers — about who owned NDTV.
“When I had gone for the interview, I was asked who was the owner of NDTV and I answered Prannoy Roy but the teacher and I had an argument because he said that it was Reliance (it was rumoured last year that Reliance had pumped in money into NDTV’s holding company). Apparently, this matter reached the principal too. Later I got to know that my interview was not up to the mark and my name being on the list was a mistake.”
The college however, is treating it as a regular incident and when Sister Christine of St Francis was contacted, she said, “I met her this morning and will take care of the matter.”
But Anam maintains she’s being singled out. In fact, she had completed her bachelor’s degree from the same college and now she says there is a rumour circulating in the campus that says she had secured the seat via “influence”. The claim stands unsubstantiated and the college has had no comments on the accusation, so far.
“When I had joined St Francis for the bachelor’s degree in 2012, I had 89 per cent and I was applying through sports quota because I was a shooter. But then I was told to go ahead through merit because I had enough marks. Why would I need influence?” she said.
