Poor medical cloth leads to ruckus in Telangana
Rs 64 lakh have been spent in buying the cloth raising the suspicion
Hyderabad: Inferior quality medical cloth has been purchased by the Telangana State Medical Services and Infrastructure Development Corporation as an inappropriate spending of Rs 4.58 crore has come to the notice of the state health department.
The actual spending in the third quarter of the year is Rs 21 lakh, but Rs 64 lakh have been spent in buying the cloth raising the suspicion. Last year, the TSMSIDC had come under the scanner for procuring excess medicines without any demand from the district hospitals. Due to this, continuous audit was being carried out and now they have come across poor quality of medicinal cloth.
To add to the suspicion, there was a hue and cry raised by senior doctors in district hospitals who were sent extra stocks of medicinal cloth. A senior health officer in TSMSIDC explained, “Complaints were pouring from doctors in Mahbubnagar, Nalgonda, Warangal, Khammam and Karimnagar. They didn’t have place for the excess stock. Also, after the first use, most of the bedsheets tore apart which agitated them further.”
Another senior officer explained, “There is a nexus of officers, pharma companies and garment suppliers in the TSMSIDC which must be brought to the book. Many a times, the big players are saved and only the small ones are caught.” An investigation has been initiated by the health department and principal secretary health Suresh Chandra has also been apprised of the same.
