Polavaram project renamed
AP govt renamed the Indira Sagar Polavaram project as the Polavaram irrigation project
Rajahmundry: The AP government on Thursday renamed the Indira Sagar Polavaram project as the Polavaram irrigation project, sparking outrage from state Congress leaders, who warned of protests. The water resources department issued GO MS No. 67 notifying the change of name.
As soon as the news reached him, APCC president N. Raghuveera Reddy demanded the GO be cancelled. “It was Indira Gandhi who had given political life to (Chief Minister N. Chandrababu) Naidu when he was a young leader in 1978 during a meeting at Madanapalli. I wonder how Naidu can forget Indira Gandhi’s help to him and remove her name. It is political betrayal and disloyalty,” he said.
Did the NDA government set a condition that funds for completion of the project will be released if the name is changed?” Mr Reddy questioned. The APCC chief warned that if the state government does not withdraw the GO, a stir will be launched to force him to do so.
Former Congress MP G.V. Harsha Kumar said, “The TD government had changed the name of Rajiv Arogyasri to NTR Seva Pathakam though NTR has no link with the scheme. I believe that the TD government is going on changing the names of old schemes and projects hoping that it can claim credit for them.”
He said that the people are intelligent enough to see through the TD government’s games and realise that it is doing so as it failed to provide good governance in the state. Earlier the Centre at the urging of the telugu desam had earlier renamed the domestic wing of the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Hyderabad after party founder N.T. Rama Rao.
