Oldest subway demolished in Hyderabad
One of city’s oldest and biggest subways, at RTC Crossroads, is closed
Hyderabad: One of city’s oldest and biggest subways, at RTC Crossroads, is closed, submerged in debris from Metro Rail pillars and stagnant sewerage water. Meanwhile, the one at Koti junction was let out to bookshops.
Both subways are in a dismal state with no security and maintenance, and have become home to drug peddlers, ragpickers and beggars during late hours. Experts also say that the designs of the subways (entry and exit points) have no designated pedestrian pathways.
Mr N.V.S. Reddy, managing director of Hyderabad Metro Rail, said, “The entry and exit points are closed on a temporary basis, the Metro works have begun on the RTC stretch. The points are closed to help traffic move. Once the station work is over, Hyderabad Metro Rail will integrate the subway; the entire underground path will be revamped.”
