Emergency was one of India’s darkest periods: PM

A vibrant, liberal democracy was the key to progress - Narendra Modi

New Delhi: Accusing the Congress of having trampled on democracy four decades ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed the Emergency as one of India’s “darkest periods”, and said the nation was “bound with chains and turned into a jail” 40 years back due to a “lust for power”.

Targeting the Congress for having imposed the Emergency, he said that a vibrant, liberal democracy was the key to progress, and everything should be done to strengthen democratic ideals and ethos.

“We mark 40 years of one of India’s darkest periods when the then political leadership trampled over our democracy,” Mr Modi tweeted. The Emergency was declared on June 26, 1975 and continued till March 21, 1977. It was in force for 19 months till polls were announced in 1977.
