BBMP revamp report may annul election

It has now emerged that the committee has proposed five palikes headed by five mayors

BENGALURU: As the B.S. Patil Committee prepares to submit its final report on the BBMP restructuring, its future hangs in the balance with the BBMP going for polls in a month. Amid reports that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will trifurcate the city much against the committee’s recommendation of three-tier system, it has now emerged that the committee has proposed five palikes headed by five mayors.

Also, the three-member committee has emphasized the role of Ward Committees and re-sizing the wards. Though the much needed decentralization has gained momentum in the report, it may not fully have an impact on the city’s development as the Congress is eyeing to win BBMP polls. The question: what happens to the report? Will the government wait for five years to implement it or will it remain in limbo?

District-in-charge Minister Ramalinga Reddy said, “If the report is approved and the decision is passed in the Cabinet, we will dissolve the BBMP and conduct fresh elections. The report is prepared envisaging the future of the city in the next 25 years.”

Committee member V. Ravichandar, who said the government had reasonably appreciated their efforts, maintained it was for the government to decide on how it would deal with the report.
