National rugby gold medallist missing since last month

Police refused to register a case five days after Sujata went missing

Bhubaneswar: After incidents of athletes making attempts to murder and even getting beaten up by hooligans, now an Indian rugby player has gone missing since May 18.

Sujata Pradhan, who was part of the state team that clinched a gold medal in the recently concluded 35th National Games in Kerala has been missing, family sources said, according to a report in ‘The Times Of India.’

"She left home for Kalinga Stadium around 2pm, but did not return. We have been searching for her since then," Sujata's father Kailash Pradhan, who lodged a complaint at Nandankanan police station on Tuesday, told the national daily.

The family lives at Barang, on the outskirts of the city. Kailash is a regular worker employed in mattress firm and alleged that earlier the police refused to register a case five days after Sujata went missing.

"We contacted our relatives and friends but failed to trace her," he said.

Rumours had it that Sujata eloped with someone, but Kailash squashed any such speculation. "I know my daughter. Sujata would have told me if she had an affair. I suspect someone was jealous after the sterling performance and abducted her," he said.
