Kochi: TGM students start anti-tobacco drive
Students took a pledge against the use of tobacco at the function
Kochi: They are on a mission to fight the evil of tobacco use that is trapping the young generation as well. Students of TGM Vidyaniketan at Maravanthuruthu, near Vaikom, have formed a fund to co-ordinate the community outreach programme activities with the theme ‘Quit tobacco, tobacco kills.’
Justice K. Narayana Kurup, former acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Madras and chairman of Kerala State Police Complaints Authority, who banned smoking in public places in Kerala when he was Kerala High Court judge in 1999, launched the campaign of TGM Vidyanikethan the other day. The school has planned a survey among the population in the area about tobacco use. Other activities include an awareness seminar, film show, street play and road show under the auspices of TGM Social Club.
Students took a pledge against the use of tobacco at the function. “The menace of tobacco use is increasing day by day. Even small children unknowingly use these products and get addicted to them. So the TGM decided to embark on these programmes to create awareness among students and society at large,” said Sreedevi Antharjanam, principal of TGM Vidyaniketan. Previously the school had conducted a survey on learning disorder among students in Vaikom taluk. A total of 13 percent out of 900 surveyed children were found affected and they were guided to take medical help.
