Sanskrit scholar Pullela Sriramachandrudu no more
He was awarded Padma Shri for literary works
Hyderabad: Well-known Sanskrit and Telugu scholar, Maha Mahopadhyaya Pullela Sriramachandrudu, 88, died here on Wednesday. Padma Shri recipient Sriramachandrudu’s death has left a vacuum in the Sanskrit and Telugu literary field.
Born on October 24, 1927 in Indupalli village near Amalapuram in East Godavari district, Prof. Sriramachandrudu, who served in the Sanskrit Academy from 1980 for over a decade, had made a mark as a distinguished national scholar. He had worked tirelessly for the growth of the Department of Sanskrit, OU, Sanskrit Academy and Surabharati Samiti.
He started his academic journey as a student of “Vyakarna Sashtra” and went on to acquire three Masters degrees — in Sanskrit, Hindi and English — from the BHU and obtained a Ph.D. in Sanskrit from OU, where he served for 27 years.
His command over Sanskrit Shastras, particularly on Vyakarana, Vedanta and Alamkara, amply testifies the fact that he was one of Sanskrit’s most versatile scholars in India. Not only students who studied under him, but intellectuals all over India, admired his capabilities.
He has written more than 150 books in three languages covering important aspects of Sanskrit. This was possible because he was a critical reader and rational interpreter of ancient texts.
He was a great teacher, poet, critic, satirist, essayist, grammarian, rhetorician, translator and a great commentator of Sanskrit works, which include his translation of Valmiki Ramayana with word-to-word meanings and commentary in Telugu which runs into 10,000 pages. He is survived by his wife and two children.
