Bountiful wind production peaks in Kovai

It’s a windfall for the industries in Coimbatore
COIMBATORE: It’s a windfall for the industries in Coimbatore as the wind energy production is peaking in the region. The windmills in Coimbatore region especially Udumalpet generated about 1,500 mega watts on June 19, this season’s highest, say Tangedco officials.
With wind pounding in full force, the wind energy production is all set to further go up till September. As the days of blackouts are over, the micro and small industrial unit operators are quite elated.
Kovai Power Driven Pumps and Spares’ Manufacturers (Kopma) president K. Maniraj said,“For the last three months the work flow is smooth as there is no power cuts. This is the season for pump-set units and the uninterrupted power supply should boost the business. But, we are facing the shortage of labourers now.”
However, industry heads sound a word of caution.
D. Nanda Kumar, president of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore says,“There is a huge generation of power through windmill but the capacity of utilisation is less. For the next four months we will face no power crisis but what after that when the wind energy will slow down?”
According to K. Ilango former CII chairman, “There is no major power cut at all in Coimbatore. There are so many windmills now, in fact these windmills are producing surplus of power which we are not able to use. Government is not able to store it and the energy produced is used by none.”
