Vatican NGO on prior permit list

Union home ministry is learnt to have put Caritas International India, linked to the Vatican
New Delhi: Stirring a fresh controversy over its crackdown on NGOs, the Union home ministry is learnt to have put Caritas International India, linked to the Vatican, in the prior permission category.
While MHA sources confirmed the move, incidentally, Central agencies appear to be unaware of any fresh move as of now. Sources said it was in 2011-12, during the tenure of the previous UPA-II government, that the Intelligence Bureau had first raised a red flag over its activities during the protests against the Kudankulam nuclear power project.
A spokesman for the NGO also denied having received any such notice and said that the organisation has complied with all laid-down norms. MHA sources said the NGO is on the watchlist and it would have to seek prior permission before receiving funds from abroad. Meanwhile, the government has made public the list of 2,406 NGOs, whose registration has been cancelled.
