Telangana Formation day festivities in schools on backburner

Meanwhile other state-run institutions celebrated on June 2

Hyderabad: The Telangana government has put State Formation Day celebrations in schools on the backburner after deciding earlier to hold them in the last week of June.

No preparations have been made for the celebrations in schools and officials said that they hadn’t receive any communications from the government regarding the same.

This is surprising, since students were to play a big role in the State Formation Day celebrations along the lines of the central government, involving educational institutions in events such as the International Yoga Day.

Telangana State Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao had even discussed the possibility of opening schools earlier than scheduled to allow students to participate in the celebrations.

But in April, the Cabinet had decided that the State Formation Day would be celebrated in schools in the last week of June rather than on June 2 since the weather would be too hot.

Meanwhile other state-run institutions celebrated on June 2. However, officials informed that the government had not sent any communication regarding this and there was now no possibility of holding a week-long fest.

“We are not aware about what the Cabinet had decided at that time. But till today we have not received any instructions from the government about celebrations in schools,” a senior official in the school education department said.

Some officials also said the plan had fizzled out because celebrating on days other than June 2 didn’t make sense.

“It doesn’t make sense if schools celebrated two or three weeks after the main gala was over. Some government schools had brought together what students they could and hoisted the national flag on June 2 itself, held some competitions and that was that,” another official in the education ministry said.
