CPM leaders and activists too staged a protest against the liquor policy and burnt it in effigy

Vijayawada: The Left parties, CPI and CPM, opposed the state’s new liquor policy that would become effective from July 1. CPM city unit activists staged a protest here on Tuesday while the Andhra Pradesh Mahila Samakhya said they would stage a protest against the policy on Wednesday.
CPI state secretary K. Ramakrishna said the government was planning to earn a huge revenue of Rs 15,000 crore through sale of liquor. To meet this target, the government might even introduce sale of liquor in ration shops in the future, he criticised. He faulted the TD government for announcing a policy which was against the party's election manifesto which stated that it would check the sale of liquor.
"It is the duty of the government to take steps to maintain public health but the liquor policy has been designed against this principle." He wondered how the government could agree for sale of liquor in tetra packs in shopping malls.
Meanwhile, the CPM leaders and activists too staged a protest against the liquor policy and burnt it in effigy. CPM leader Ch. Babu Rao reminded that the government promised to abolish belt shops. "Now, it is giving green signal to sale of liquor in malls too," he pointed out. CPM city secretary Donepudi Kasinath said the state would face stiff opposition from public with regard to the new policy.
