Rain halts normal life in Malnad region

Several rivers in Malnad region are flowing close to the danger level

SHIVAMOGGA: Several rivers in Malnad region are flowing close to the danger level in the wake of a torrential downpour during the 24 hours.

The downpour commenced on Monday and continued today, resulting in rise of water level in the rivers Tunga, Bhadra, Sharavathy, Kumadvati, Varahi and tributaries. Some parts of Tirthahalli, Hosanagar, Sagar and Sorab taluks were inundated following heavy rainfall, forcing the district administration to rush people to safer areas. Several houses in low-lying areas of the district have been flooded because of copious rain in the region.

Official sources said the national highway linking Sholapur and Mangaluru has been submerged near Mandagadde in Tirththalli taluk with water of the swollen Tunga overflowing on the road. The movement of vehicles has been affected on the stretch between Shivamogga and Tirthahalli, and the picturesque Mandagadde bird sanctuary inundated.

Hosanagar taluk recorded the highest rainfall of 29 cm during the 24 hours while Sorab recorded 1.6 cm rainfall, the lowest in the district. Nearly 40 villages in Sorab taluk were plunged into darkness due to disruption of power as many supply lines snapped since last week. Life in Hosanagar taluk, too, has been affected because of the monsoon.
