Mahatma Gandhi University sets up first ever Super Speciality Hospital
KOTTAYAM: For the first time in the history of Indian universities, the MG University here is establishing a virology research centre and a super-speciality hospital at Thalappady near Puthuppally.
Work on the research centre has entered its final phase while the 70-bed hospital is ready. It will focus on the research on epidemics to develop antibodies against all sorts of epidemics.
The twin-establishments, conceived almost 10 years ago, is expected to open shortly - expanding the university's activities into social services.
“The hospital will mainly treat viral infections. Though there’s an outpatient wing, it will be functioning as a referral hospital. With this, we are for the first time spreading our activities outside education,” vice-chancellor Dr Babu Sebastian told DC.
Eminent persons were entrusted with the management of the research centre and the doctors were appointed to work at the hospital. Both will be functioning on the campus of the school of medical education.
However, the VC could not reveal the names as the appointments were awaiting the final clearance. India’s premier National Institute of Virology is located in Pune.
