Woman’s suicide leaves her IVF kid orphan

Women unable to handle money lenders from whom she borrowed money for fertility treatment

Chennai: A 40-year-old woman orphaned her three-year-old daughter, born after in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment, by committing suicide as she was unable to handle the money lenders from whom she had borrowed money for the fertility treatment in Tiruvallur district. Her husband had died two years back. Latha, wife of Viswanathan, hanged herself to death on Monday night at her house on Mohamed Ali street. According to police, she was struggling to make both ends meet after the death of her husband, a few months after the daughter was born.

“She was working as a subscription charge collection agent of a local cable TV network,” the police said. The police after making initial enquiries said Latha and her husband had borrowed nearly Rs 15 lakh to spend on their fertility treatment. She gave birth to Srinidhi 18 years after marriage.Unfortunately a few months after Srinidhi was born Viswanatha died of ill health. Since then Latha had been facing lots of hardship to bring up the kid while she took up part time jobs.

The pressure on her to pay back the money she had borrowed from others to spend on fertility treatment had increased in recent times. Neighbours noticed her death only after the child kept on crying continuously. When came to know about the incident, Tiruvallur town police team went to the scene and sent the body to GH for postmortem. The girl child was handed over to Latha’s brother.
