Men lurking on matrimonial sites for sexual gratification, affairs

Hyderabad: Telangana state and city police have asked women to be careful while searching for NRI or well-educated grooms online. A large number of men are lurking in matrimonial sites merely for sexual gratification, sexual affairs or one-night stands. There are also crooks, who send gifts and meet the family, to convince the victims to marry before extracting a huge amount and fleeing. A majority of their victims either are unmarried, middle-aged women or those who have recently lost their husbands.
Police say no matrimonial websites have any method to verify the authenticity of an account-holder irrespective of their reputation, huge membership or status. Since there are increasing complaints regarding wedding frauds, top police say awareness on this among women should increase. “There are several people with fake profiles in matrimonial sites. Women have to be careful about the account holders, who lie about their past life, marital status, age, personality, health, social and economic status. They could be criminals, infected with sexually transmitted diseases, bankrupt etc,” says a cyber crime official from Telangana state CID.
Officials say there are cases, in which women were exploited financially and sexually and the victim could not approach the police in time fearing different kinds of blackmailing. “The traumatic victims are threatened by the fraudsters that if they reveal it to the police or others, they will be stalked in future also. They use intimate photos and video clips to threaten victims,” said an official.
The state police ask prospective brides and their parents to make covert inquiries about the grooms, whom they meet online. “His professional status, financial condition, family background, age, education, habits, health, lifestyle, etc should be inquired using different ways. Parents can also use private detective agencies, which offer pre-marital check for a reasonable fee,” aid an officer.
Police say that there are gangs operating by uploading profile of women gang members to lure wealthy men into marriage only to gain the legal status of ‘wife’ then use the legal status to extort property and wealth. After wedding they might file a false case to extort money and go for out of court settlements.
