Kalaiarasan’s film is about a true tale
It looks like Tamil audiences are geared up to welcome horror as a genre after the releases of several spooky flicks recently. Satish Chandrashekaran, a former IT specialist with a few short-films to his credit, is now making his foray into the horror genre with Jinn. Although the meaning of the title is unfamiliar to many, the director says that the word ‘Jinn’ comes from ghost in Arabic, and is known to English speakers as ‘genie’.
“The story is based on my personal experience,” Satish tells DC. The director claims that it is different from a routine horror thrillers. “Jinn is the story of five friends who decide to break free from the monotonous office routine, and embark on a journey to a hilly station. Without knowing that one of them has been possessed by a deadly spirit, they travel together and check into a traveller’s bungalow. The spine chilling incidents that follow forms the rest of the movie.
In my college days I had a similar experience when we set out for a picnic when one of us was possessed by a ghost,” he says.Kalaiarasan of Madras fame, Hari, Kaali Venkat and Munish Kanth who gave notable performances in Mundasupatti and Arjunan form the cast. Though there’s a lead girl Preethi, there is no romance in the film.Tollywood composer Radhan of Andala Rakshasi fame who has also done Santhanam’s Valibha Raja in Tamil, is scoring the music for Jinn.
