Patient falls to death from radiation table

The body was handed over to the relatives after post-mortem

ALAPPUZHA: A cancer patient, who was being given radiation therapy at the Medical College Hospital here, fell off the table and died due to head injury on Monday.

The patient, P. V. Thilakan, 59, Vallyathveli house, Kottamkulangara, had been under treatment for brain tumour for some time and had undergone a surgery 21 days ago.

On Monday, he was put on the table for radiation therapy. While the radiotherapists and helpers took a break, the patient fell down from the table causing head injury at 12. 50 noon and was declared dead in half an hour. “The doctors said he died due to deep vein thrombosis, which is risky for cancer patients,” said Mr B. Nizam, Ambalappuzha SI.

However, the relatives of the dead accused the staff of negligence and staged a protest. Later, the DYFI activists took out a march to the hospital.

Dr Santhosh Raghavan, Superintendent, MCH, ordered a probe into the incident. The body was handed over to the relatives after post-mortem. The police registered a case based on the complaint of the relatives.
