Giving up LPG subsidy is gas
Handful of bigwigs have heeded to plea on subsidy
Hyderabad: Barring a handful of bigwigs most people are clinging to LPG subsidy in Telangana and AP. Only a few ministers, MPs, MLAs and bureaucrats have responded positively to the Centre’s “Give It Up” movement launched by Prime Minister Modi in March. While TS and AP together have 1.60 crore LPG connections only 16,955 have given up subsidy so far, which is just 0.1 per cent against the national average of 0.35 per cent. In India, out of 15.30 crore LPG consumers nearly 5.80 lakh have given up subsidy.
“We should note that this is voluntary. It started gaining momentum in the last two months. We will take this campaign forward by approaching states and corporates to encourage their employees earning high salaries to give up subsidy. Already several corporates have started asking their staff to give up subsidy,”said Srinivas, the state level coordinator for the oil industry in TS & AP.
He said Telangana has a consumer base of 70 lakh and AP 90 lakh. “Of them, 10,285 from TS and 6,670 from AP gave up subsidy. The average consumption per household in TS and AP is seven cylinders an annum. Each consumer is entitled to Rs 239 subsidy per cylinder which means by giving up subsidy each consumer is saving Rs 1,673 for the government every year. With this amount we can provide a new connection to the poor free since Rs 1,600 is collected for a new connection,” Mr Srinivas said.
However, the subsidy burden on the oil companies came down significantly because of Aadhaar-bank-LPG linkage. Only 87 per cent of consumers in Telangana and 96 per cent in AP could complete the seeding. Referring to just 15 bigwigs giving up subsidy, Mr Srinivas said.
