EC seeks probe against police for campaigning

The officer in trouble is Ganeshan, assistant commissioner of police, Salem East
Chennai: Public elections department has forwarded an unusual complaint to state DGP asking the police to look into an ethical issue, whe-rein a police assistant commissioner was sp-otted wearing an AIADMK party dhoti in R.K. Nagar constituency last week. When contacted a top official said a note from the office of chief electoral officer has been dispatched to DGP office, state police headquarters on Satur-day, informing the top brass to conduct an inquiry and respond to the official communiqué.
The officer in trouble is Ganeshan, assistant commissioner of police, Salem East. “If the complaints and allegations levelled by the Opposition parties are found to be true, the police officer is in big trouble, as the model code of conduct, Tamil Nadu police subordinate services rules - 1973 and Tamil Nadu Government Services Conduct Rules prevent such action by those in service,” the official said, adding that the election observers were waiting for a reply from the state police.
A few complainants had also forwarded pictures of the AC in party dhoti to the office of CEO, the official said. The police officer is said to be on medical leave.
