Off-campus centres of Mahatma Gandhi University to move court
Thiruvananthapuram: Off-campus centres of MG University have decided to move the court against the university’s decision to close them down.
Sources said a meeting of the managements of the centres took the decision. Their main contention was on who would own responsibility for the losses they suffered. They pointed out that they had paid Rs 2, 50, 000 as fee for getting approval for the centre.
The position of the university was that the present syndicate or vice-chancellor Babu Sebastian was not responsible for their plight as they were sanctioned before their tenure.
The syndicate apprised the management that the state government had refused sanction for the off-campus centres in December 21, 2012.
The university had invited applications for off campus centres on May 31, 2012. However, the agreement was signed with these centres on May 23, 2013.
This meant that the university had entered into the agreement by concealing the fact that the centres did not have the recognition of the government, sources in the management said.
The UGC asked the university to shut down its international and national off-campus centres on June 8, 2014, and again on July 8, 2014 saying universities cannot operate outside their jurisdiction.
