Call for removing caste names from public places

The GO 1531 should be imposed and the names should be withdrawn
Coimbatore: The Social Justice Youth Federation has appealed to the district collector Archana Patnaik to remove caste and community names of roads, streets, hotels and private establishments.
Advocate N. Paneerselvam of the federation said that several roads, streets, hotels and private shops are named after communities and demanded the district administration to take efforts to withdraw the names and rechristen them.
Citing examples, he said Gounder Mess, Naidu Hall, Devar Street, Iyengar Bakery, Pallar road, Adi Dravidar street, Range Gounder street among others are some of the names that indicate communities and should be withdrawn.
The advocate also noted that during the tenure of the former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran, a GO was passed on October 3, 1978 stating that names should not be community based. The GO 1531 should be imposed and the names should be withdrawn, he noted.
