Fraud manpower firms go on extortion spree
Uneducated villagers from Karimnagar, Mahbubnagar, Warangal are targeted
Hyderabad: Fake job rackets and manpower consultancies, who promise jobs in gulf countries, target uneducated villagers of Karimnagar, Warangal, Mahbubnagar.
The crooks, after fleecing lakhs from gullible victims in the name of Visa, threaten them to stop going to the police. In a recent case 35 people from these districts were cheated.
Senior police officials say that according to the Emigration Act 1983, such job consultancies and agents should have a licence issued by the Union labour ministry. Others in city will be prosecuted. The racketeers target the village population in order to make sure that the victims are gullible and do not initiate immediate legal action once they are cheated. "The crooks loot money, and when the victims ask for the money, they make them wait for many months, and then threaten them in different ways. They also keep the original passports of victims with them, and threaten to destroy them. The fraudsters also give back money to the most rebellious victims so that they do not mobilise other victims and initiate legal action,” said a source from Mehdipatnam, where a big fake consultancy was raided by police two days ago.
“The fraudsters advertise themselves by distributing pamphlets in village mosques and other gathering places. They offer jobs of drivers, construction workers, carpenters, electricians, plumbers, and other blue collar jobs. They also collect Rs 75,000 to one lakh from each job aspirant," said B. Limba Reddy, DCP of commissioner’s task force. Two days ago, The Commissioner’s Task Force arrested Shaik Hafeezuddin, MD of Talath Manpower Consultant based in Mehdipatnam, who used similar modus operandi to cheat at least 35 victims from villages.
According to the police, the job agents cannot recruit people unless they have a valid licence from the Ministry of Labour. “According to Section 10 of the Emigration Act 1983, agents without valid certificate can be punished. The act says the holder of the certificate shall not employ any sub-agent for the purpose of conducting or carrying on his business,” said the DCP. Officials said unemployed youth and people should be cautious about these advertisements.
