Chennai: A 56-year-old cook was murdered after a drunken brawl near his residence in Maduravoyal on Sunday night. Abdul Kareem, a resident of 5th block, MMDA Colony, Maduravoyal, was found dead with his face smashed near a water tank, few metres from his home, the police said.
Investigations revealed that Abdul Kareem left his house around 11 pm on Sunday after a phone call. “He usually returns home and sleeps on the terrace. So, his wife, too, did not bother to check if he had returned home,” a police officer said.
Around 2 am, the police were alerted about a man lying in a pool of blood near the MMDA water tank after which they secured the body and sent it to KMCH. They also alerted Abdul Kareem’s family.
Probe revealed that Abdul was drinking and picked up a fight with a local resident that escalated into a brawl. Following this the other person smashed his face. The police have detained a tender coconut vendor, Vinoth (37), in connection with the murder.
