Hyderabad stretches in rain
Thousands braved their way to community halls and parks to celebrate International Yoga Day
Hyderabad: Despite the rains, thousands braved their way to community halls and parks to celebrate International Yoga Day on Sunday. A group of youngsters, from the Balagokulam group, also held a “flash yoga” at Inorbit mall in Hitec City on Sunday evening. Thirty children took part. Lakshman Rao, one of the members, said, “We wanted to present yoga to the youth and did some innovations in the asanas and presented a 30-minute ‘flash yoga’ in the mall.”
The 350 inmates of Cherlapally Jail also held a yoga session on the jail premises with help from Art of Living trainers. More than 15,000 people gathered at various locations like L.B. Stadium, Gachibowli sports complex, K.V.B.R. indoor stadium, Saroornagar Stadium, the Gymkhana Grounds, B.R. Ambedkar Stadium, the Cycling Velodrome on Osmania University campus, RRC grounds, BHEL Ambedkar Stadium, Isro, the NGRI campus and the University of Hyderabad to practise yoga.
Union minister for labour and employment Bandaru Dattatreya, badminton coach Pullela Gopichand, table tennis player Naina Jaiswal and Tollywood actress Madhu Shalini also took part in yoga sessions.
At Charminar, people practiced saptarushi yoga — walking on their toes — for a kilometre. Many organisations held special sessions in residential colonies and apartments.
Ayurveda doctor dies during yoga session:
Retired government ayurveda doctor Veera Reddy, 60, died while practising yoga at the Sahara Estate community hall in Vanasthalipuram on Sunday morning. Dr Reddy went against the advice of yoga trainers and inhaled water through one nostril to take it out from the other (jalneti).
Malesh Kumar, a resident of the colony, said, “The water never came out and he fell on the floor and rolled about. We could not do anything.” It is suspected that the water affected his breathing and he had a major heart attack. Community members, along with Dr Reddy’s wife Sabuhagya Laxmi and son Sai Nandan Reddy, rushed him to Kamineni Hospital where he was declared brought dead.
Members of the community hall said that he practised yoga every day enthusiastically. He worked at the Karvan government centre in the old city and had retired six months ago.
