Hyderabad: Five persons lost their lives on Sunday with heavy rains lashing both coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for the third consecutive day on Sunday. Officials in several districts went on alert to tackle floods.
In AP, a massive search operation has been launched for about 200 fishermen who have been missing for four days. Three persons died in two rain-related incidents in Khammam district. A woman was electrocuted while live wires snapped and fell on her. Two girls drowned in a water-filled trench at Kondagalagattu under Tekulapalli mandal on Sunday. The girls had gone to pick up henna leaves.
In Guntur, a woman and a child died when walls collapsed on them in separate incidents. In AP, five helicopters —two from ONGC, one each from the Coast Guard, Reliance and Cairn Energy — have joined a Coast Guard ship and 12 boats to search for the 200 fishermen who went missing from Kakinada on June 16.
Elsewhere, Vizag rural police said that two fishermen from Bangarampalem area of S. Rayavaram mandal were missing at sea from June 19. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has offered all help to rescue them.
The met office said the southwest monsoon was vigorous over coastal AP and Telangana. A depression in the Bay of Bengal would move northwestwards and weaken gradually during the next 24 hours, the IMD said.
In the last 24 hours, Srikakulam in coastal AP received the maximum rainfall of 20 cm; Etunagaram in Warangal received around 18 cm. Rivulets and rivers are overflowing both states. The communication between Kunavaram and Bhadrachalam has been cut.
