Dry spell ends, farmers cheer rains

Karimnagar district recorded an average 6.79 cm of rainfall; road connectivity, power hit

Adilabad: The heavy rains that struck the districts of north Telangana has ended the prolonged dry spell that hit the previous two agriculture seasons. It has brought cheers to the farmers this kharif season and respite from the heat to the people in the district. Farmers have begun farm operations on this happy note and it is hoped that there would be good germination of seeds due to sufficient moisture in the soil.

The streams, rivulets and irrigation projects have started receiving rainwater and it is flowing into river Pranahitha, Penganga and Godavari due to heavy rains in upstream bordering Maharashtra. Now farmers are looking for institutional help for investment in agriculture but there was no sign of it as state government is still preparing modalities for the second installment of crop loan waiver.

However, there are doubts among the farmers about the regularity of the rains and they are not sure of good rains after a few days as forecasted by the Indian Meteorological department. Farmers are showing interest in cultivation of cotton and soya crops with the onset of monsoon with good rains. Majority of the farmers were desperate for bank loans to purchase agriculture inputs like seeds, fertilisers and pesticides to start their season but in vain. Farmers were denied crop loans by the bankers without getting clear instructions from higher ups and assurance on crop loan waiver by the state government.
