Bike crash kills two on GST Road

Deceased were racing friends on another bike when the accident took place

Chennai: Two youths, including a 17-year-old plus-two student on a bike, believed to be a racing against another two-wheeler, died when their vehicle crashed against a Metro rail’s pillar on GST Road in Alandur near Kathipara grade separator on Sunday morning. The deceased were identified M. Sathish Kumar, 23 from Choolaipallam in MGR Nagar and his friend A. Arun, 17, a plus-two student from Choolaipallam.

Sathish was riding the bike while Arun was pillion riding. Both were speeding against their friends Rasukutti and Saravanan who were on another bike, police said. Within seconds after Rasukutti’s bike had passed the point towards the grade separator, Sathish, who was closely following his friend’s bike, ended in a high speed crash on Metro rail pillar.

“The bike was crushed in the impact while Sathish died on the spot. His pillion rider died without responding to treatment at Royapettah GH. It was a high speed crash while negotiating a turn,” the police said. Sathish’s body was also sent to Royapettah GH for postmortem.

Initial enquiry revealed that four of them on two bikes had started early from MGR Nagar to Chengalpet to watch or bet on auto-rickshaw racing held there. But when they reached Maraimalai Nagar they got a call saying that the race was already over. So they halted their journey towards Chengalpet and decided to spend some time in an interior village beyond Maraimalai Nagar. Later, they decided to return to city from Maraimalai Nagar. They were racing each other, which led the fatal mishap, police noted.
