Mahatma Gandhi University shuts down all off-campus centres
Thiruvananthapuram: The Mahatma Gandhi University closed down all its off-campus centres on Saturday following an order issued by Governor Justice P. Sathasivam, who is also Chancellor.
The centres were functioning without the state government recognition, the order said. The university has decided to directly send study materials to the students and conduct examinations for them.
As many as 133 off-campus centres were functioning under the MGU. Of them, 78 centres were closed down earlier.
The Governor had earlier summoned Vice-Chancellor Babu Sebastian and other officials to know their views on the off-campus centres.
Apparently, he was upset by the fact that the off-campus centres functioned even after a directive issued by the High Court dated February 2, 2015 to close them for various violations.
The UGC in June 2014 had also asked the varsity to shut down its international and national off-campus centres. The Directorate of Collegiate Education had said that the centres functioned violating the norms of the government.
