Salem: The organs of a grocer in Salem, who was declared brain dead, have helped a patient get vision and another, suffering from liver failure, get a fresh lease of life.
The 44-year-old grocer, G. Narayanan, was suffering from high blood pressure which led to sudden brain haemorrhage and was admitted to VIMS private hospital on June 17.
Despite intensive treatment, he did not recover and was declared brain dead on Friday. Though struck by tragedy, his wife, Padmavathy, and their three sons, generously came forward to donate his organs.
The pair of eyes were sent to Vasan Eye Care in Salem and his liver was sent to a hospital in Tiruchy for transplant. According to VIMS Hospital’s chief operating officer, Weslie J. Prem Kumar, the hospital had obtained the licence for harvesting the organs of a brain dead patient. “His eyes and liver were taken for donation. But the kidney could not be used because of the presence of stone,” he said.
Narayanan’s relative, P. Senthil Kumar, said, ‘We did not want his body to rot and go waste in the soil. We wanted it to be of use to patients who have no vision or suffering from liver or kidney failure.”
