BJP’s support to Vasundhara Raje may be temporary

Vasundhara may not be able to enjoy the iron grip on both the party
Jaipur: After three days on tenterhooks, Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje may have got a reprieve for the time being, but there will be no respite in the coming days. The backing Ms Raje got from her party, the BJP, may well be temporary with the rider that there should be no more damaging evidence regarding her help to former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi in obtaining immigration clearance in the UK or her son’s financial dealings with him.
In fact, the gravity of the changed circumstances is not lost on Vasundhara Raje either, as she desperately sought an appointment with party president Amit Shah to clarify her position, quite unusual for someone who is known to work on her own terms, having defied the national leadership and forcing it to follow her decisions in the past.
But a more serious implication of the Modi saga for the Chief Minister could be erosion of her authority. Vasundhara Raje may not be able to enjoy the iron grip on both the party and the government in the state.
Ms Raje’s rivals within the party, who were till now keeping a low profile, may be emboldened to take her on openly. They will be sharpening their knives for the woman who descended into politics from nowhere just before the 2003 Assembly elections but, since then, continues to cut them to size.
But having survived, Vasundhara Raje, known for her autocratic style of functioning, may have to become more accommodative of not just her opponents in the party but also her colleagues in the government.
