Villagers amazed by ‘fish rain’ in Vijayawada
The villagers witnessed hundreds of fish spread across acres of rain waterlogged fields
Vijayawada: Villagers of Gollamudi in Nandigama mandal on Friday woke up to a surprising ‘fish rain’ that left hundreds of fish in their fields. The villagers witnessed hundreds of fish spread across acres of rain waterlogged fields.
Believing that the fish fell along with the heavy downpour in the early hours of Friday, villagers spread the news within no time to nearby areas from where people rushed to collect the fish.
Locals said that the fish called Vallaga of sizes between 4 and 6 inches were found in large numbers in the fields on the outskirts of the village. Environmentalist and retired professor of Marine Biology Duggaraju Srinivas said it is not feasible for a fish rain to occur.
“Fish does not fall from the sky. It is only displacement caused due to rain mixed with gales or tornados. Due to intense wind, the water from nearby rivers, canals, and fish tanks get displaced. Along with the water, fish and other marine life too are displaced,” Mr Dugguraju said.
He said that such incidents occurred in the 1970s in Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts and often occur in other countries.
