Woman sets ablaze self, child at Kanjikkuzhy

The woman and child were burnt alive despite attempts by her father to rescue them

ALAPPUZHA: A 27-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by setting herself and her one- and -half–year- old son on fire at her home near Progressive Junction at Kanjikkuzhy near here on Thursday.

According to the police, the woman identified as Anitha, 27, wife of Bipin, Gokulam, Progressive Junction, set herself and her child on fire after pouring kerosene on her body around 7am.

“The woman and child were burnt alive despite attempts by her father to rescue them. She had a telephone conversation with her father, who lives just 500metres away from her home, before taking the extreme step. She demanded that her father come home to take the child, who had fever, to the hospital.

When the father reached there, he found they were burning alive. “The father broke open the door with the help of neighbours and found a suicide note which said that her husband Bipin was keeping a distance from her and her child for the past few days. She called him to take the child to the hospital. But he did not reach out to her leading to the tragedy,’’ said the police. She got married to Bipin two years ago. “Anitha is the only daughter of her parents, retired government employees. Her husband is working with the fire and rescue wing in Ernakulam. On Wednesday, Bipin went to his parents in Vayalar and then to work from there the next day,” police said.

“The reasons for taking the extreme step would be ascertained after the statement of the family members,” said K G Aneesh, CI. The bodies of the deceased were handed over to kin after completing legal and medical examinations at Alappuzha Medical College Hospital. The police have registered a case under the section 174 of CrP.C.
