Though it was difficult to sight the moon thanks to the cloud cover, the sirens from the mosques in the city alerted the faithful that Ramzan began from Thursday night and the first Roza, or fasting, was to be observed on Friday. By late evening Muslims had already begun preparations for Sehri.
