Memons set charitable example in Hyderabad
Memons, migrated to Hyderabad during partition
Hyderabad: The few thousand Memons (an ethnic linguistic Muslim group) who live in Hyderabad are setting examples for other communities by providing two-bedroom apartments to the poor in their community free of cost.
Halai Memon Jamat, a non-governmental social organisation, has built 152 flats in the Old City, which have been allotted to the poor whose income is below Rs 10,000 per annum.
Memons, after migrating to Hyderabad during partition, established Hyderabad Halai Memon Jamat (HHMJ) to support their less fortunate community members.
President of HHMJ, Mohammed Ashraf, said, “Memons have their own ‘Memoni’ language. It’s actually not a language but a boli without a script. You can recognise a member of our community or establish a connection with another member through Memoni.”
“Our population in the Twin Cities is approximately 31,000 and majority live below the poverty line and struggle for the basic necessities of life. Keeping in view the poverty in the community, the HHMJ was established in 1956,” he said.
HHMJ has constructed two residential apartments, one with 55 flats and another with 99 two-bedroom flats at Tadbun area near the Nehru Zoo and handed them to the poor. The beneficiaries have to pay Rs 600 for monthly maintenance and can live there as long as they want.” The HHMJ said they are also helping 700 students by paying their school fees and buying books for them.
