Gundu Rao doles out ragi for families below poverty line

We have reached 1.9cr people in Anna Bhagya scheme & have achieved 95% target

Mysuru: Ragi will be distributed among below poverty line (BPL) card holders in ten districts of South Karnataka, Minister for Food and Civil Supplies, Mr Dinesh Gundu Rao said.

Mr Gundu Rao participated in a unique campaign on “Healthy Food” taken up by Mysuru Zilla Panchayat in association with Department of Food here on Thursday. He said, the state government has been able to mobilise as much as 13,80,000 quintals of ragi by providing a support prize of Rs 2000 per quintal. “We will be providing 3 kg rice and 2 kg ragi per unit per month for BPL card holders in ten districts of South Karnataka including Mysuru, Chamarajnagar, Mandya and others,” he said.

“We have not been able to collect enough jowar. So we will be distributing jowar in four taluks of North Karnataka for a month— two taluks of Darwad and two taluks of Gulbarga.”

We have already reached 1.9 crore people in Anna Bhagya scheme and have achieved 95 per cent of the target, he said. “Our country has 20 crore people suffering from hunger, although we have 160 to 170 tons of grains. As much as 20 to 30 per cent goes waste which causes loss of Rs 30,000 crore.”
