Kochi: The Ernakulam Government Medical College (EMC) is facing a tough time with more doctors deserting it even as the infrastructure woes continue to persist.
The latest to quit the college is the medical superintendent Dr K.G.R. Mallan, allegedly disgusted with the administrative set-up.
Dr Jacob Baby, head of the pulmonolgy department and Dr Jayasurya from the psychiatry department were among the doctors to leave the medical college in recent times.
A section of the staff under CAPE at the college and are eligible to be absorbed as permanent staff under government is a peeved lot as they have not been absorbed into the 350 staff posts created by the government now.
They include 14 ministerial staff, 6 librarians and 5 technical staff. “There are altogether 375 permanent employees at the medical college and 350 posts have only been created by the government now which hits 25 above said staff. We want that anomaly to be rectified,” said an employee.
The staff in the three sections have called for a strike from July 7 to rectify the anomalies and grant justice to the 25 staff.
They are also peeved that the political leadership including the local MLA and PWD Minister V K Ebrahim Kunju taking no active interest to settle the issues within the college and make it the health destination for the middle class, lower middle class and poor of the district, especially those in the eastern parts.
