Wooing OBCs: Karnataka Government plans mega Urs events
Bengaluru: In a strong bid to further consolidate OBC votes across the state, the social welfare department has decided to constitute an apolitical committee headed by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, and comprising only those who were closely associated with the late chief minister, Mr D Devaraj Urs, to mark the birth centenary of the leader.
The year-long celebrations would culminate in a show of strength of OBCs either in the form of a rally or a convention in or on the outskirts of Bengaluru next year. The state government had recently announced that it will organise year-long programmes to highlight achievements of the late Mr. Urs.
The proposed committee would consist of more than 60 eminent persons including political leaders who were associated with late the late Mr Urs and subsequently ascribed to other political ideologies including BJP in the state. Noted personalities from various fields including journalism would be appointed as members of the committee.
New schemes for BC students announced
On the eve of late CM D. Devaraj Urs’s birth centenary, the state government has announced three schemes for the benefit of backward class students.
The schemes include a full time scholarship for students studying abroad, fellowship for backward class students, who have register for full time PhD and felicitation for students who excel in SSLC, PUC, graduation and professional courses.
Social welfare minister Anjaneya said students, who want to pursue higher education abroad, would be given scholarship. They would get Rs 10 lakhs per year, for a maximum period of two years. Besides, the government would sanction fellowships to backward classes who register for full time PhD.
