Decision on Light Metro after Aruvikkara By-poll

Bureaucratic hurdles continue to stall the ambitious projects
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state cabinet is likely to take a final call on the light metro projects only after the Aruvikkara by-poll. Bureaucratic hurdles continue to stall the ambitious projects proposed for Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram.
A strong campaign by bureaucrats against signing the consultancy agreement with DMRC (Delhi Metro Rail Corporation) continues while the government finds it difficult to bypass these objections leading to delay in the schemes.
It is said the officials were trying to derail the plans to facilitate the smooth completion of Kochi Metro. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Wednesday chaired the board meeting but failed to hold any fruitful discussions.
A senior official said that the board didn’t hold much discussion on the light metros. “We discussed only statutory matters at the board meeting. The final decision has to come from the cabinet. The announcement will come only after the Aruvikkara poll,” said the official.
