Chennai police officer caught playing rummy on duty

His pic of playing cards with empty bottle of alcohol goes viral on WhatsApp
Chennai: A departmental inquiry has been ordered into the alleged incident of a traffic police SI playing cards during duty hours in a police booth in Chromepet on Monday night when he was supposed to be busy checking vehicles. The policeman’s picture playing rummy with an empty bottle of alcohol on his side, went viral in WhatsApp on Tuesday morning.
A senior city police officer told this newspaper that an inquiry has been ordered into the alleged incident. “We will enquire with him and his colleagues before initiating action for playing cards during duty hours while other police personnel were busy checking vehicles at night,” an officer noted.
The picture circulated in WhatsApp in police and journalists' groups showed SI M. Jayavel in uniform, posing for a photo with cards in his hand. The hand of another man, possibly another traffic cop, was also seen in the picture. The players had spread a lungi on the table to play cards. Apart from a heap of playing cards, one can also see a paper and a pen kept ready for noting down the points of the game. At one end of the table there is an empty liquor bottle, a cigarette pack along with a plastic tumbler and a water jug.
According to the police source, the picture was obviously taken by another policeman who was present at the booth while Jayavel was busy playing. “It seems that card games is a usual practice for the SI and his associates, including some local politicos. It is also possible that he had a tussle with one of his colleagues after which the other policeman clicked his picture and shared it through Whatsapp,” sources added.
