For the first time, CBSE conducted the test on behalf of UGC

Chennai: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and University Grants Commission (UGC) have announced the results of National Eligibility Test (NET). Of the eight lakh who took the test, 3,200 toppers can now become assistant professor with research fellowship from UGC.
For the first time, CBSE conducted the test on behalf of UGC on December 28, 2014. NET is used as eligibility for a person to become an assistant professor or junior research fellow in universities and colleges.
The candidates who qualify for the award of junior research fellowship are eligible to pursue research and are also eligible for the post of an assistant professor. Barely the results for December 2014 exams have been announced, CBSE has already announced that the next exam will be on June 28, 2015.
Seeking hike in fellowship: Faculty and students have urged the human resources development ministry and UGC to increase fellowship to a minimum of Rs 5,000 from Rs 3,200 in a bid to increase the pool of researchers in the country. Prof. C. Pichandy, one of the senior faculty in a private arts and science college said that UGC provides a fund of Rs 25,000 per month to the research fellows for three to five years.
