MLAs, officials absent: BBMP trifurcation panel defers meet

Senior leaders from the Congress such as V.S. Ugrappa, R.V. Venkatesh and a few others, were absent

Bengaluru: The absence of a section of legislators from the city, especially those from the ruling party, and officials from the BBMP forced the Select Committee, constituted to examine the Karnataka Municipal Corporations (Amendment) Bill, 2015, to postpone the meeting without “fixing any future date” on Monday.

Senior leaders from the Congress such as V.S. Ugrappa, R.V. Venkatesh and a few others, were absent. The legislators did not give any reasons for their absence, while the BBMP officials said that they were busy with CM’s city visit.

A senior leader, who took part in the meeting, told DC that members of Opposition parties were upset with officials for not being present on Monday, as it was scheduled before the CM conducted his city rounds. “This meeting was crucial as a section of senior officials from the BBMP had gone on a tour of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai, and had submitted a report. They should have elaborated on the report, but they skipped the meeting,” the leader said.

Of the four metros, only Delhi was trifurcated and it is facing numerous challenges. The Delhi administration is now thinking of merging them back. “The report highlighted that trifurcation had thrown open challenges to the administrative setup. It created several supernumerary posts that led to extra financial burden and heavy losses to the corporations,” the source said.
