KFC chargesheeted for worms

Pictures of chicken tikka with wriggly worms went viral on the social media

Coimbatore: The Food Safety and Drug Administration Department will file a charge sheet against KFC outlet on DB road and the company for having sold food that is unsafe for consumption, the Designated Officer Dr R Kathiravan disclosed here.

In June last year, a city-based businessman Yasser Arafat found worms wriggling in a piece of chicken tikka he had purchased at the KFC outlet on DB road. He had picked up a take away bucket of chicken and cool drinks and went home with his friends. Just as he started eating, he noticed live worms wriggling out of the chicken legs.

After posting the pictures of chicken tikka with wriggly worms on the social media, he handed over the contaminated chicken and informed the KFC. The retailer immediately sent two representatives to him and offered to give fresh piece of chicken tikka. Irked by the callous attitude, he decided to hand over the food to the Food Safety Department.

The representatives of KFC also offered to get the chicken checked in their labs but Arafat refused to hand it over to them. They also maintained that the chicken sold in the outlets were sourced and cooked adhering to stringent norms.

The FSDA department had collected samples and sent it to the lab in Chennai for further analysis and the lab reports have confirmed that the chicken did not conform to the safety norms and was unsafe for consumption. Hence a chargesheet will be filed at judicial magistrate court in Coimbatore.

“Though the company had maintained that they had taken the parcel and they had nothing to do with the worms, it is for the court to hear both sides and decide”, said Dr Kathiravan.
